Cross-Country Day Trips

     Callaghan Valley

Come and join us for an exciting new cross-country skiing adventure EVERY SATURDAY, from January 5/08 to February 23/08 , in a chartered luxury coach to the brand new Whistler Olympic Park in the Callaghan Valley just south of Whistler, featuring 35km of groomed ski trails for both skating and classic.

Your day will begin bright and early, the Sigge’s coach leaves promptly at 8:00am. Please ensure you are at Sigge’s, 2077 W. 4th Avenue, by 7:45 am. This will allow plenty of time for you to come into Sigge’s, check your name off the list, pick up any rental boots if you require them and purchase any last minute items you may have forgot. Our second pick up point is 8:20 am at St. David's United Church, 1525 Taylor Way, just above the Upper Levels Highway. There is plenty of parking in this area and very convenient for those who are coming from anywhere on the North Shore or over the Second Narrows Bridge.

Weather, roads and traffic volume permitting we’re scheduled to arrive at the Whistler Olympic Park by 10:00am. The new 10,000 square foot Day Lodge is not scheduled to open until the 2008-09 ski season but we will be able to use the Nordic/Ski Jumping technical building as a temporary shelter during this first season. There will be no concession available during this season either and all skiers are encouraged to bring there own food and beverages with them. All extra personal belongings can be left onboard the coach which will be secure and accessible throughout the day. Your Sigge’s Host will provide you with a ticket, wire and trail map. At lunchtime you have the option of eating onboard the coach or outside amongst the beautiful scenery of the Callaghan Valley.

The trail system at the new Whistler Olympic Park will offer a variety of terrain for all ability levels. Exactly what to expect remains to be seen as this is the brand new venue which will host all of the Nordic events during the 2010 Winter Olympics and it is ours to discover and we welcome your comments as we will collectively learn what this new cross-country ski area has to offer. Please make sure you are keeping track of the time. It is very important that you make your way back to the base area / parking lot no later than 3:45pm! The departure time from the Whistler Olympic Park is 4:00pm sharp!

At 4:00pm, we’re on the highway back to Vancouver. Sit back, have a nap and enjoy the ride. Sigge’s hosts will dazzle you with their smiles and stories all the way home. You can expect to arrive at St. David's United Church by 5:40pm and back to Sigge's by 6:00pm, weather, roads and traffic volume permitting. We hope you have a wonderful trip!

Please book at least one week in advance!

WHAT TO BRING

A hearty lunch, lots of water, suntan lotion, sunglasses, warm lightweight gloves, toque, and extra socks. As well, bring along a change of clothing for the ride home.

Dress in layers!

Begin layering with synthetic or merino wool long underwear, which can wick moisture away, keeping your skin warm and dry. For your upper body, 3-4 layers are usually recommended. Pullover jerseys, thermo lycra tops, fleece sweaters and lightweight breathable nylon shell jackets are a few suggestions. Your legs require 2-3 layers at most. Remember to wear thermo tights and/or shell pants (available lined or unlined) over your long underwear. At Sigge’s we stock a great collection of functional quality clothing from Louis Garneau, Sugoi, Craft and Swix. Please come by, we would be happy to help you find the right combination!

Group specials for Callaghan day trips are available, you must book and pay all at once in order to receive a 10% discount for groups of 10 people or more.

Private instruction is available at your ski area of choice (Callaghan or Manning). Our rate is $50 per hour for the first person, and $25 per hour for each additional person.

     Manning Park

We will transport you  EVERY SUNDAY, from December 2/07 to March 30/08 (except December 23rd and December 30th), in a chartered luxury coach to the winter wonderland of Manning Park, featuring 16km of groomed ski trails.

A busy Sunday in Manning Park, preparing for the day at Lightning Lake.

Your day will begin bright and early, but well worth setting the alarm(s)! In order to maintain a tight schedule, the Sigge’s coach leaves promptly at 7:00am. Please ensure you are at Sigge’s by 6:45 am. This will allow plenty of time for you to come into Sigge’s, check your name off the list, pick up any rental boots if you require them, purchase any last minute items you forgot and most importantly, find out which coach you are traveling up on! For most Sundays, Sigge’s transports 2 or even 3 – 55 passenger coaches to Manning Park! If you are traveling up with a group, simply phone Sigge’s to double-check if you are grouped together. We cannot guarantee seat switching on Sunday morning. Our second pick up point is 7:20 am on Boundary Road at Broadway. There is plenty of parking in this area and very convenient for those who are coming from the North Shore. There is a BC Transit bus stop on the North West side of this intersection, approximately one-half of a block North on Boundary Road. This is the actual pick up point, NOT on the corner of the intersection. Your third option for pick up is across from Guildford Mall in Surrey. At 7:40am, the coach departs from the East side of 152A Street at the North side of 102A Avenue, Guildford. Wait in front of ICBC Claims Centre, across the street from the rear entrance to McDonald’s Restaurant.

Now everyone is onboard and we’re scheduled to arrive at Manning Park Lodge by 10:00am. This is a brief 10-minute stop. You can visit the indoor facilities, pick up a coffee and muffin, fill your water bottle or browse in the gift shop. If you are keen and would like to begin your ski day from the Lodge, you may do so but must get a trail ticket before you set out for the day. Your Sigge’s Host will provide you with a ticket, wire and trail map. All other travelers now board their assigned coach, and we head 4km up the road to Lightning Lake. This is where your coach will remain for the day. You may leave your extra personal belongings onboard the coach, as it is secure. At lunchtime you have the option of eating onboard the coach or outside amongst the beautiful Whiskey Jack birds. Watch out for your sandwich, these birds are smart and will snatch it from behind your back!

Sigge in his element at Manning Park.

The trail system in Manning Park is well marked and consists of ‘loops’ through the campground, then leads you up to Strawberry Flats via the North Gibson route (steep) or South Gibson route (gradual climb). Once you arrive up amongst the flats, you can ski all the way to the T-Bar, which links you to the downhill ski area. You are allowed a free lift up the T-Bar to access the lodge for refreshments and a snack. Descending the T-Bar hill back to the cross-country trails is a lot of fun and great practice for snowplows, breaking snowplows, step turns, telemark turns and heck, even parallel turns (if you’re up to the challenge). Round trip back to the coach at Lightning Lake is about 15km. Please make sure you are keeping track of the time. It is very important that you make your way back to Lightning Lake by no later than 3:20pm! The coach leaves Lightning Lake at 3:30pm for the day, and heads back down to Manning Park Lodge. The departure time from the Lodge is 4:00pm sharp! You have the option of skiing out to Manning Park Lodge from Lightning Lake. If you are an average skier, allow yourself 45 minutes.

*You must sign your name on the ‘ski out’ list on your coach!*

At 4:00pm, we’re on the highway back to Vancouver. Sit back, have a nap and enjoy the ride. Included in your day trip cost are wine, cheese, pepperoni, crackers and juice. Sigge’s hosts will dazzle you with their smiles and stories all the way home. You can expect to arrive at Guildford by 6:15pm, Boundary by 6:40pm and Vancouver by 7:00pm. We hope you have a wonderful trip!
